Beginning September 9, 2023, Porsche and Audi will join the ranks of non-Tesla brands utilizing the extensive Supercharger network across North America, including Canada. These automakers have announced that select vehicle owners will receive adapters enabling them to charge at Tesla Superchargers through the newly adopted NACS port, a standard developed and shared by Tesla with other manufacturers. This rollout follows the Volkswagen Group's decision to implement NACS compatibility for its brands—including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors—set for December 2023
Porsche is initiating its NACS adoption with a "soft launch." Current owners of the Taycan and Macan Electric models will need to reserve a complimentary NACS to DC adapter through the My Porsche app to access the Tesla Supercharger network. During this initial phase, compatible Porsche EV drivers will utilize the Tesla app at Superchargers, but Porsche plans to enable charging via the My Porsche app in the coming months.
In parallel, Audi will also receive a branded adapter for its newer 2025 models, which include the Q6 e-tron, A6 Sportback e-tron, and e-tron GT. However, it’s important to note that Audi’s Q4 e-tron will not have access to Tesla Superchargers at this time.
For Porsche, any Taycan and Macan Electric models from the 2026 model year onward will come with a complimentary NACS adapter. In contrast, owners of Porsche EVs from the 2024 model year or earlier will need to purchase the adapter from Porsche’s online shop or authorized dealerships, priced at approximately CAD 185. Both Porsche and Audi are also working on software updates to integrate Tesla Supercharger locations into their navigation systems.
While Porsche and Audi gain access to this valuable charging infrastructure, it remains to be seen whether other Volkswagen Group brands will follow suit. As electric vehicle technology evolves and becomes more accessible, the market for EVs is growing rapidly.
