In an exciting announcement, Google has revealed that Gemini will be available for early access on smart displays and speakers starting this October. This new AI assistant will take over from Google Assistant on the company's smart home devices, and will be offered in both free and paid tiers. This move indicates Google's intent to broaden its subscription services, similar to Amazon's strategy with Alexa .
Gemini for Home was first showcased at CES 2025, where Google demonstrated its potential to revolutionize interactions with smart devices. By utilizing generative AI, Gemini aims to facilitate more natural conversations, allowing users to speak to their devices as if they were conversing with another person. Whether you're seeking answers to trivia questions or adjusting your thermostat, Gemini is designed to respond intuitively. The true innovation lies in its multimodal capabilities, which can integrate data from various Nest devices—like a video feed from a security camera—to provide insightful responses about your home's activities.
As Google prepares for the October rollout, the company promises to deliver all these enhancements along with access to Gemini Live, which will enable even more personalized conversations. However, details regarding pricing and the specific features that will require a subscription have yet to be disclosed. Previously, at CES, Google mentioned that Nest Aware subscribers, who currently pay CAD 10 monthly, would have early access to Gemini later this year. There is speculation that the paid version of Gemini might be included in existing subscription plans or offered as a standalone service.
Gemini for Home is set to launch in early access this October, with Google indicating that more information will be shared soon. This update promises to make our smart homes more intuitive than ever. As we prepare for this new wave of technology, many will be looking to upgrade their current setups.
